Chris Hughes

I hand build all my pots using pinching, coiling, slabbing and modelling techniques. I make bowls, bottles, plates, lamp-bases and clocks. Many of my forms are sharp edged and finely balanced and I use features such as mountains, streams and beaches and also weathered doors, windows and stone walls to decorate my pots.

I draw in soft pastel enjoying the direct contact with the surface of the paper and the colour. Landscape is my main subject but my drawings have become more and more abstract in quality. I usually work from memory when drawing local scenes but use my own photographs for other landscapes and focus mainly on the mountain areas of the north of England and Wales. Recently I have been making sets of greetings cards from my sketches.

I exhibit my work in local exhibitions; the drawings and pots in the Southport Palette Club annual exhibition and exhibitions with Sefton Artists and the Art and Craft Guild of Lancashire. Shops stocking my work include Lancashire Makers in Southport and Ormskirk and the Wigan Framing Company and Gallery. My work can be found in private homes in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Australia.
